Er, what? That's ridiculous and not an answer. WWII was the last conventional war that we're likely to ever have on this planet. The war in Iraq isn't conventional at all, if it were we wouldn't be getting spanked so badly.

You see, warfare nowadays isn't about killing enemy troops and securing territory. It is about attrition and entropy and cost. What do you think the ratio is between one american solider and your average insurgent (or terrorist, freedom fighter, partisan, I'll lump them all under the term insurgent)? Maybe 1:20? I would say that is probably correct. It costs us, in terms of money and time and resources at least 20 times what it costs the insurgents to field a single grunt. We're talking cost of recruiting (since Iraq started the insurgency has had recruiting costs minimalized to nil), cost and time to train, outfit and deploy. It has been estimated that the insurgency has spent roughly $500k US since the invasion of Iraq. The US has spent at least $5 billion. And that $5 billion doesn't include the long-term costs that will be incurred as a result of medical expenses, which are currently being estimated to cost one trillion dollars before this generation fades out.

So, got a real answer as to why this is taking so long? Here is the answer: because it is.

And liberal isn't a bad word, friend. It comes from the same place as the words liberty and liberation. Sadly, real liberals don't exist in our political structure anymore, and conservativism is gone as well. Right now its these fake-Republicans that are really radical fundamentalists and fake-Democrats that are...well I don't know what the hell these guys are, but they better do something to fix the damage done to our Constitution over the last five years.

you know I would concede that Global War against Islamic fundamentalism is NOT a conventional war (like WW2) - nevertheless it is a worldwide conflict which is fought on many battlefronts - including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc., and in many different ways - i.e. ideologically, by freezing enemy capital assets, by detaining terrorists and extracting vital information,

atrocities happen, mistakes are made, false intel is used, and civilians die just like in any other war

but in the end United States, under leadership of president Bush are spearheading the forces of good against Axis of Evil, and if liberals get in the way of the global struggle for survival, they are not on our (Coalition) side - I hate pragmatism too, but this is as clear as it gets "you are either with us or you are with the terrorists" , time to pick a side

We had a real reason to be in WWII...duh. Look up the public approval for a war before the Pearl Harbor bombing. It was an abysmal 9%. Americans then were smart enough to realize they're not a World Police.

Actually, I have an odd question.
Are you by any chance actually a liberal, publishing all this conservative-hate jargon for some alterior motive? say amusement? a poli-sci experiment etc?
I mean, most of your readers seem to be liberals, and you comments are cheap repetitive slogans with out logical conviction.

I just have a hard time believing that anyone claiming to be intelligent could be so easily duped by conservative spin. I have a hard time believing that anyone could say the outrageously ignorant and racist, homophobic, intolerant things that you say. I mean, do you pray to an icon of Hitler?
You must realize that you sound kinda like him.
You know, with all your boundless, fanatical, hate mongering and your blatant ignorence of either history or current affairs.
So tell me the truth, is this some kind of joke?

Let me address poster name - titian?! should I even take that seriously?

As I was saying before, American and Canadian liberals are so separated from post-9/11 reality and brainwashed by left-leaning New England type blue-blood intelligencia - they are no longer to perceive and process the reality of today's global environment

This is not an experiment or onion.com type news - these are views representing new generation of Americans, who see that liberalism seized working when passenger planes hit WTC towers, when starving Beslan children were used as human shields by brave Islamic fighters, when these savages kill commuters in London ... and on, and on

Like it or not - neo-conservatism is the ideology of tomorrow, and today's youth do not wear peace signs and spit on the veterans - this blog is just the part of this new ideology sweeping the world

oh and if anyone shares Nazi Hitler's believes, it's today's liberals - check out this famous quote by Hitler and weep - "We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions." --Adolf Hitler

Aren't labels fun!

Here are a few definitions of the word liberal:

- a person who favors an economic theory of laissez-faire and self-regulating markets (Source:wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn)

- Political viewpoint with origins in Western Europe during the 19th century; stressed limited state interference in individual life, representation of propertied people in government; urged importance of constitutional rule and parliaments.
(Source: occawlonline.pearsoned.com/bookbind/pubbooks/stearns_awl/medialib/glossary/gloss_L.html)

- A liberal is a person who supports moderate social progress and reform.
( Source: www.tomgreengop.org/politicalterms.htm)

- Traditionally, the word liberal means to be open to new ideas and tolerant of others. To be liberal politically, is to emphasize political and economic freedom. They tend to favor gradual changes in society and promote government programs to solve problems.

Somehow you, and many other Americans, have managed to twist the term into a derogative statement.

Your use of labels only displays your ignorance.

Good day.

I really can't believe that people like you are real. Do you honestly believe that war on Iraq is about freedom? You're fighting for the money...to spread your Colonialism across the globe. Well if freedom is occupieing other countries it's pretty strange freedom to me. And then you wonder why the Iraqian people fights back...maybe they want freedom of their own? Because of people like you the world is dangerous place to be right now. I have nothing against soldier...they do their work...but it is sad that they are fighting without a cause...because fighting for the Wall street Gordon Gekko A**holes is pretty lame reason to lost a life. You do know that there wasn't chemical weapons in Iraq...the "reason" to go there no longer exist...

jpolbi - I hate to burst your bubble, but - many of "us", are neo-conservatives (and president admits it) are well aware that we are addicted to oil, and depend on it - and you are right - to preserve American lifestyle, we must follow these offensive global policies - I take it you are not American ...
